Summary/Abstract: Diplomatic relations between Montenegro and the Ottoman empire can be divided into the period from 1486 when Montenegro became a part of the Ottoman empire to 1878, and the period from 1878, when Montenegro was officialy recognized as the 27th sovereign state by the Congress of Berlin. During the first period diplomatic relations of the two states referred primarily to representing Montenegrin vassals in Istanbul and other Ottoman cities by means of Hrvat-pashas and heads. In the second period, from the establishment of independence of Montenegro by means of the Congress of Berlin in 1878, full diplomatic relations with the empire were established all until 1912, when they were interrupted due to the Balkan Wars.
