Summary/Abstract: This paper will analyze the ways of translating definite and indefinite article into Serbian. The meaning and the usage of articles will be investigated through the corpus of “Mister Botibol“, by the author Roald Dahl, and we will analyze their transfer to Serbian in two published translations of the story. The first part of this paper deals with the theoretical analysis and the grammatical realisation of the categories of definiteness and indefiniteness, which is reflected in the system of articles in the English language. These categories are further analyzed in Serbian, which has no article system, and which has no obligatory grammatical marker for denoting definiteness/indefiniteness. On the other hand, there were assumtions that definiteness was a universal category which had to me marked one way or the other, and that it was grammaticalized in Serbian either by word order or by some other linguistic means. Therefore, the aim of this paper will be to try to analyze and demonstrate in which way the basic meanings of articles are transferred to Serbian and whether some rules can be established.
