Summary/Abstract: This work aims to depict the specific themes through which some Romanian rural Roma self-identify through narratives. Mainly, it aims to reveal the meanings they attribute to conversions, work, and family relations within their life stories. By examining these meanings, this article will discuss the shifting identities of the interviewed subjects – their self-identities as well as the identities of their micro-groups. This study will also propose an analysis of the self-defining labels that the subjects use within interview situations, and will differentiate between the contexts in which the labels Roma or Gypsy are used.
