Summary/Abstract: The focus of this paper is on Ðhap Hulusi Görey who was a cultural mediator having appended his signature on a wide range of cultural texts from caricatures, book covers, logos to advertisements during the first decades of the Turkish Republic. These cultural texts not only give us the opportunity to signify the cultural meaning of a past period here and now but also contain hints for the emergence of the sphere of advertising/ advertisement which can be considered as a field of cultural production. Drawing upon theoretical constructs and concepts in Pierre Bourdieu’s and De Certeau’s toolkit, this study tackles with the following issues: the modus operandi of Görey as an individual agent who developed his dispositions, i.e. schemes of perception, thought and action, in the field of advertising in response to the objective conditions of his age; how he articulated, attained and maintained his ensemble of social relationships in this field, his trajectory of positioning and the strategies he followed to carve out his career in the multidimensional spaces of advertising. Concordantly, this study traces the process of biographical the process in which his texts including his (auto)biographies were transformed into fictional narratives. Therefore, this paper implicitly argues that the examination of the narratives of Ðhap Hulusi Görey intersects with the history of the advertising in Turkey in the axis of continuities and discontinuities in cultural production. So, the narratives of Ðhap Hulusi Görey, who was a republican elite and a(n) agent/ subject having strategies of resistance, should be signified as the reflections of his struggle by setting tactical and conjunctural practices in the spaces of cultural production.
