Summary/Abstract: The genesis of the Middle East has been intrinsically linked with the evolutions at the level of the competition among the great powers. The First World War represented the opportunity to implement some expansionist tendencies which were visible since the 19th century in the relations between the West and the Ottoman Empire. But the new reconfiguring formula for the Middle East was not able to offer the necessary elements for articulating an effective management system of the territories which were recently liberated from Ottoman rule.
