Summary/Abstract: The general purpose of this paper, which analyses drinks and drink culture, is to try to understand and explain the particular consumption of globally recognised drinks such as tea, coffee and fizzy drinks as well as traditional drinks. The study explaining this matter is a 8-day field research conducted in Gaziantep city center. Findings of this study were analyzed considering the social function and daily usage of drinks, the usage on special occasions and as a part of healing. In Gaziantep, drinks are central to the social life. Especially the way of drinking tea and coffee is an important indicator of social relationships and hierarchy in society. Another finding is that drink culture has changed in Gaziantep with the effect of media and globalisation. Worldwide popular drinks such as fizzy drinks, instant coffee, green tea and some herbal teas have become widespread in Gaziantep as well. In addition, the society has attained a certain level of “consciousness” about healing drinks due to the information from media and other channels. However, one of the most important finding of the study is that traditional drinks have continued to sustain along with global drinks. In this manner especially traditional drinks are an important part of social life and a sign of belonging to the city.
