Summary/Abstract: This work analyses Joyce’s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in the light of religious discourse and artistic practice. The novel tells the story of the development of the main protagonist Stephen Dedalus, through whose experiences we are in a position to follow how two different urges emerge within him, one towards religion, and the other towards art. Religious discourse surfaces as a driving force which changes Stephen’s views on life, and it is realized in different ways, like the sermon and confession. Analysing these aspects, we will be able to see how they influence the main protagonist. Аrt represents a different view on life which is formed in Stephen’s mind over time. Rejecting religion, he turns to art, which becomes his vocation. Therefore, in the section of the work which deals with artistic practice, we will explore the theories which Stephen expounds, after which his true artistic capability follows.
