Summary/Abstract: The article is a contribution to the ecumenical discussion on Martin Luther, from a Catholic perspective. It tries to answer the question whether the Reformer can be considered a witness to Christ and a teacher of faith for all Christians, including Catholics. Firstly, the article presents the significance of Martin Luther for the contemporary Lutheran – Catholic ecumenical dialogue. It also notes some important changes and developments in the Catholic literature on the Reformer in the 20th century. Secondly, it discusses the problem of the significance of Martin Luther’s witness and teaching for today’s Christians. Thirdly, it shows some difficulties related to the ecumenical (non-confessional) relevance of Luther’s witness and teaching.
