Summary/Abstract: The path to the effective protection against unemployment is tiled with a number of normative and practical challenges. Arguing that environmental protection and unemployment protection are challenges which should be addressed together, the author’s research is aimed at finding the answer to the question concerning the role of unemployment insurance system in the process of eco-transition. This paper is an attempt to design eco-strategic framework for the development of skills that match the current and future needs of society, with special emphasis on the role of employment services. Sustainable development is possible only with the active participation and engagement of the workforce. Green jobs and made-green jobs, still named green-collar jobs, are the jobs of the future labour market. Employment policy makers should be well prepared for the challenge of changing the structure of the workforce in the conditions of ecologically clean industry. Anyway, exaggerated expectations that the changed structure of workforce will respond to all challenges of eco-transition should be limited. However, from the design of a strategic framework for skills development and integration of education and work, minimal results in term of reducing the unemployment rate can be expected.
