Summary/Abstract: The age of the women getting married in Mardin in the villages is down to 12-14 years . Nearly half of the women are intermarried and the ones that are married are mostly married to their uncles’ sons. Despite the fact that cousin marriages are preferred particularly in Kurdish and Arabic cultures, it’s being practiced also in Syriac culture. The decision that the women should get married is made by the male individuals of the family (father, grandfather, uncle) and women are almost ignored. It’s known that the period between the agreement (before marriage) and marriage is not prolonged due to various concerns. The practice of ‘berdel’ (trade) is being made by exchanging the sisters. This practice is useful economically, makes the relationship between families stronger and makes it easier to compromise under situations like kidnapping the woman and blood feud. When getting married, religious marriage is immediately conducted but it’s noticed that official marriage is conducted under circumstances like the child being born or starting to study. In Kurdish and Arabic societies,a certain amount of money is demanded from the man’s family by the woman’s family (what is being known as ‘başlık parası’)
