Summary/Abstract: The main economic functions of SMEs include also their contribution to regional development. Welldeveloped business environment is essential for the development of Slovakia and its regions, thus contributing to the growth of the economy of market. In those facts it is a role for government to encourage and create favourable conditions for competition and minimizing respectively or eliminate administrative barriers hindering business activities. The interaction between region and SMEs requires a build / support the existence of a series of regional institutions / centres whose mission is to help SMEs in various situations. In this article we will focus on selected representatives of regional institutions to support small and medium enterprises in Slovakia using secondary sources and prime research and point out their essential activities.
