Summary/Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the changing role of the state in the economies of two countries where this role has been high at least since the World War 2. The analysis is limited to changing patterns in ownership of enterprises. Waves of nationalizations and privatizations, together with the causes and motives behind them, are presented, and so is the way these two countries of different cultural and historical background have by now reached the stage of transparent public assets management.
