Summary/Abstract: Francis of Assisi, the 12/13-century Christian saint and the contemporary protector of nature, is an author frequently cited today in environmental ethics and bio-ethical theories. Even the harshest critics of his own religion, who see Christianity as the origin of contemporary environmental crisis, see St. Francis as the bright example of the opposite. The “revolutionary” nature of his view of nature is thus first considered within the context of traditional Christian relationship with nature. The innovations advocated and lived by St. Francis – a deep religious belief in the connection among all creation, insistence on spiritual and value-based equality of elements of nature, expansion of the notion of community, distance from anonymity – are considered in the central part of the paper. At the end, the focus is on the inspirational value of St. Francis' model of experiential sensitivity to nature for contemporary debate.
