PASCHAL MYSTERY OF CHRIST MADE PRESENT IN THE LITURGY ACCORDING TO THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Summary/Abstract: The Catechism of the Catholic Church given to her by John Paul II on October 11, 1992 faithfully and orderly presents the teaching of the Scripture, lively Tradition and the authentic Magisterium of the Church as well as the spiritual heritage of the Church Fathers, Doctors, and Saints. The Catechism was developed so that the whole people of God could gain better knowledge and understanding of the Christian mystery. The content of the Christian mystery is presented in the four interrelated parts of the Catechism. The Christian mystery is: the subject of faith - the Creed (part 1); celebrated and handed on in the sacred liturgy (part 2); the light for the Christian life (part three) and the basis for the prayer (part four).The article focuses on two chapters of the second part of the Catechism, entitled The Celebration of the Christian Mystery, which show that the work of saving the world was accomplished by Christ the Lord “principally by the Paschal mystery of his blessed Passion, Resurrection from the dead, and glorious Ascension” (cf. CCC 1067; SC 5). By this mystery Christ realized the eternal divine plan and let its continuation to his Church that celebrates the Paschal mystery in the liturgy. The Church proclaims and celebrates the mystery of Christ so that the faithful may live from it and bear witness to it in the world: “For it is in the liturgy, especially in the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist, that „the work of our redemption is accomplished,” and it is through the liturgy especially that the faithful are enabled to express in their lives and manifest to others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of the true Church” (CCC 1068; SC 2).The author of the article attempted to show that the Catechism passes to all the faithful the essential teaching of the Church that the Christian liturgy not only recalls the events accomplished for our salvation, but also actualizes them and makes them present here and now. The Paschal mystery of Christ is celebrated, yet not repeated; it is particular celebrations that are repeated and in each of them takes place the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that makes the unique Mystery present (cf. CCC 1104). Therefore, the great mysteries of salvation take place in the liturgy through the presence of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
