Summary/Abstract: The piece has been read on a NBU conference on Dimitar Dobrovich, a 19th century Bulgarian portrait painter. Portrait of a Girl (with its sense of childhood melancholy), Girl behind a Curtain, A Woman with a Child are interpreted through the idea of the so called affectum vivacitatae leading back to Rembrandt. At the same time Dobrovich is interpreted as a delicate deconstructor of the classical monumentality and an insightful observer of the variable femininity.
