Summary/Abstract: After defining the basic concepts of toponymy and word formation, the paper focuses on derivation and composition as the two most common word-formation processes of US states ethnonyms in Serbian. The paper also deals with productive suffixes -(a)c, -anin/-janin, -an(a)c, -ka, -anka/-janka, -ski, -anski and other word-formation phenomena, such as gender motion, sound changes, neutralization, constraints and infixation. At the end, seven criteria of linguistic regularity are discussed with ethnonyms being summarised in three tables.word formation, toponym, ethnonym (nominal and adjectival form)
