Summary/Abstract: The Russian society was roused when the Crimea joined the Russian Federation. This has raised some issues for our historians, such as terminology to define the case in question, analysis of its background, the driving forces, the opinion of the Crimean Tatars, and the role of Russia in the episode in focus. Announced as an important historical event, the Crimean phenomenon forced historians to face an unusual situation since there is only scarce information and powerful political bias, which turned into a real challenge for their professionalism. The dominant (though not the only one) concept is a patriotic one, which promulgates the return of the Crimea back to Russia to be legitimate, given the policy of the independent Ukraine. The author elaborates on the initial stage of historiography on that issue.
