Summary/Abstract: In the article the author analyzes the theories of civilizations from the point of view of formal structure. The main thesis of the articles states that many theories of civilizations have fundamental structure that determines its basic characteristics. The fundamental structure is represented by two or three main civilizations being in opposition to each other and the other just adding to the picture. One of the most important trends that inspired the author is Edward Said’s orientalism. According to offered reasoning, the theories of civilizations represent the project of identity. The article is a part of scientific trend in sociology of knowledge and uses the elements of its methodology.
