Galicia’s Institutions of Higher Education in the Period of Autonomy

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the situation of universities in autonomous Galicia. The main area of research is the situation at universities and in the Lviv Polytechnical School, including the number of academic staff, students and lectures. The analysis also included the issue of financial support for academics, and led to the conclusion that Galicia gaining its autonomy contributed to the development of education and improved the educational level generally. Greater access to funding brought academics to new areas. The situation at the universities analyzed was similar: The number of teachers, lectures and student body increased from the outset of autonomy. Moreover, new faculties, departments and fields of study were opened. Galician educational institutions developed numerous famous humanists.
