Summary/Abstract: This article 2 analyzes the role played by religious beliefs in the identity construction of different communities of peasants in the Valais region. In her first two volumes of short stories, Douleurs paysannes and L'Enfant aveugle, Corinna Bille depicts an old-fashioned but fascinating world, where moral rules are traced by the Church. Little inclined to modifications of any kind, the inhabitants of the village have a simple way of life, depending on seasonal work and religious feasts ; the ultimate aim of these people is to expiate their sins.
