Summary/Abstract: Mme de Staël’s De la littérature establishes a relationship between religion and philosophy in an era when religion is widely considered to be incompatible with reason. Mme de Staël refrains from suggesting a specific religion as the one true path. Instead, she writes of a spirituality that springs from the conscience of individuals and unites all people through universal truths which reach beyond the boundaries of religious dogma. De la littérature posits that modern authors should seek to inspire this sort of religious sentiment in people. In Corinne, Mme de Staël herself revisits several spiritual concepts expressed in De la littérature and elaborates on them in the context of the novel. Using the characters’ personal thoughts, sentiments and reactions to life experiences, the author is better able to illustrate the rapport between religion, reason and sentiment
