To let the cat out of the bag: An analysis of idioms with animals in Dutch, French and Polish

Summary/Abstract: This study involves discovering the Dutch idioms with animal names compared with their English, French and Polish equivalents. The article contains also the information about phraseology (types of phrasems, division, characteristics). It presents the main results of the research (which were made for a master thesis) just to show that these two Germanic languages, such as Dutch and English, have many similarities in the field of phraseology. We assume that the French language has also an impact on the Dutch. Besides there are many idioms with animal names, and it turns out that in the phraseology an animal is often a reflection/metaphor of a man, what we often see in the fairy tales.
