Between two homelands: poly-alterity and identity reflections in the French-speaking author Spyros Tsovilis

Summary/Abstract: Spyros Tsovilis, a contemporary writer of the Hellenic diaspora, is a particularly significant case of immigration literature based on a situation of exile and construction of identity. His first novel, Les Carnets de garde, describes the return of a young man to Greece in order to do his military service, where he takes notes during his guards and permissions. This experience accentuates the phenomenon of distance, as identified by a double exile. The novel raises universal questions, beyond the author's personal destiny. Spyros Tsovilis questions the human condition in a globalized world, through the personal experience of a man torn between two homelands, France and Greece, but finally belonging to Europe. Against all expectations, the novel Spyros Tsovilis does not describe the return home as a moment of joy and relief, but rather as a moment of conflict. "The return to home appears as a kind of “dysnosty”, a term composed of the greek prefix dys- (" hard ") and nostos (" return "). The experience of the "double return" described in the novel Spyros Tsovilis is a kind of deeply contradictory movement despite its apparent linearity and has a double spatial and temporal dimension; its evocation therefore raises the physical limits of the movement in which it is originated, and it is moving to a starting point.
