Summary/Abstract: : Althoug he was always found his inspiration at the root of popular tradition, asserting both his identity and the importance of this rumanian origins, Panaït Istrati nevertheless wrote in French. Of Greek origine on his father’s side, fighting for universal love and the triumph of liberty, justice and truth, he has chosen to express his ideas in the only language which somehow represented his Greek-Rumanian heritage. Thus he created in his works a world of his own, between 2 cultures and 2 languages. At the time, intellectuals were seduced by the french littérature which conveyed the ideas of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, stemming from the Siècle des Lumières. Istrati is definitely a leader in the French speaking world.
