Summary/Abstract: In this paper I purport to study a series of (more or less explicit) Orthodox religious words used in French in order to refer to tastes and odours associated with liturgical Orthodox practice in the various Christian Orthodox communities constituted in France starting from the first half of the last century together with the rooting of the Orthodox spirituality in this West European country. The richness of simple words (of Latin origin) or derived from French roots or borrowed from Greek and used to refer to food of religious significance, which may be eaten in certain liturgical periods, as well as some odours characteristic of the Orthodox religious services is an evidence of the great linguistic flexibility of the French language and its extraordinary capacity of adapting the referential contents of Orthodoxy phonetically, semantically and lexically.
