Summary/Abstract: The article examines the problem of labor and spare time in a philosophical - theoretical aspect and in terms of the Christian ethics as well. In a historical perspective the category “spare time” is associated with the participating of man in functional roles accepted in a particular cultural and social setting. The “spare time” can be interpreted as “time for oneself” or “private time”. At the beginning, the ancient philosophical concept regarding spare time as “time for the soul”, developed also in the Middle Ages as well is represented. Later in the period of enterprise development the spare time is needed by man to recover himself from the labor process. A new aspect of the problem is the quest for public legitimacy of this category. In conclusion the author comments the theosophical rationalization of freedom (spare lime) as an expression of personal human dignity.
