Summary/Abstract: Starting from the idea that writing is the written experience of identity beyond time and that identity is both a temporal and a spatial act, I am going to demonstrate that, with Peter Ackroyd, one’s identity becomes one’s narrative, which comes to be interpreted and understood by the reader through a process of difference between the subject of the story and his identification with that particular subject in the act of reading. I am going to refer to Peter Ackroyd’s fiction and non-fiction – Albion – and to demonstrate that literature is focused on as a signifier of national identity, the nation being an imaginary construct that depends for its existence upon imaginative literature.
