The Image of Ev(e)il: Ideology and Representation in Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts

Summary/Abstract: When dealing with written forms of ideological expression or other means of disseminating discourse such as images, it becomes obvious that most of these forms not only reflect collective sensibilities but also fashion them. The medieval illuminated manuscript is not limited to transmitting collective representations of women. Such a text and its illuminations form an ideological discourse whose aim is that of ascribing a position and an attitude for the woman and towards the woman in the medieval society. The pedagogical function of the manuscript testifies to the fact that we are dealing with more than mere representation.
