Summary/Abstract: The article presents the current status of the Romanian energy system. The initial focus rests on naturalreserves, energy mixes of production and demand, infrastructure, governance structure and energy securityrisk perceptions, from which representations of the national interests are derived. In a second step, thecountry’s strategic objectives are introduced and discussed against the background of opportunities andconstraints deriving from trends of the global energy system and EU energy policies. Finally, five directionsof future economic development are presented from which Romania’s energy sector and – more generally –its economy stand to gain across on-going technological transition.Over the past 25 years, the Romanian energy sector has progressed hesitantly. In the longer-runcompetitiveness and economic efficiency are expected to increase. EU energy policy has mostly beenadopted and internalized, albeit with occasional delays and instances of infringement. As the latest politicaldevelopments in energy policy are touched upon, the article comes to the conclusion that the countrymust continue to reform, especially in terms of energy governance.
