The syntax of groups with the basis miasto in polish until 1939

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the shaping of the custom of the adjustment of segments in groups like {miasto Poznań}, {miasto Warszawa} from the Old Polish to the Modern Polish period. On the basis of substantial material, the author concludes that in the appositive groups of this kind agreement syntax (e.g. {w mieście Łódź}) was dominant until 1939, and the government syntax (e.g. {w mieście Łódź}) was rare. The collected data contains examples in which names borrowed from other languages appear in the appositive group in their original form, and they are not inflected (e.g. {w mieście Kafarnaum}). The pre-1939 custom differed significantly from the current one. In the Modern Polish, in the majority of groups of this type we can observe variant types of adjustment: either based on congruence or rection (e.g. {w mieście Katowice / Katowicach}).
