Summary/Abstract: The problem of poverty can be observed in the context of the causes that are conducive to its origin, extent and forms of manifestation in some segments of social structure, and finally through the prism of the consequences caused by it. On the horizon of developmental processes of modern society, the concept of poverty is becoming a part of public political and social discourse. The change is given a special impetus by EU actions towards achieving the optimum in social development, where the importance of the social policy is equated with the economic policy. By developing a strategic plan for poverty reduction, in order to create conditions for the construction of mechanisms for the reduction of regional disparities, the Republic of Serbia is trying to synchronize strategic documents with the European standards in this area. In the first part of the paper, an overview of development and changes in the concept of poverty in the theoretical domain and its concretization in the field of research is outlined. The second part analyzes the strategic documents of the Republic of Serbia aimed at reducing poverty and increasing social inclusion, and special attention is given to the harmonization of key aspects/dimensions of this social problem as an indicator of integration into the national policy, but also the achieved accuracy in monitoring the implementation of these strategies in the function of economic and social progress.
