Summary/Abstract: The social economy appears in the context of the issues of unemployment and social exclusion. For some time in Poland, we talk about the new trend in social sciences called the social economy, whose main goal is the professional and social reintegration of long-term unemployed and socially excluded. This article is devoted to initiatives undertaken for the benefit of persons who are long-term unemployed and socially excluded in Bytom, Zabrze with in the social economy and the Urban Family Support Centers. There have been here the exact characteristics of social economy entities operating in Zabrze and Bytom. In addition, attention was paid to system projects and Local Activity Programs, whose executors are Family Support Centers in Zabrze and Bytom. The aim of all these activities is the professional and social reintegration of long-term unemployed, socially excluded or threatened with them. In the article there have been devoted the place of definitional issue of the social economy concept and obstacles in the formation and development of social enterprises. Many respondents had problems with the explanation of what they under stand as the concept of social economy. It was also noted numerous barriers in the formation and development of social enterprises.
