The stigma: problem of stigma and social exclusion of people with mental disorders

Summary/Abstract: The stigma of mental illness in a large contributor to the social exclusion of people with mental disorders, which prevents them from implementing important life goals. What is characteristic of social exclusion is cumulative, and acts as a vicious circle: the exclusion in one dimension can easily lead to exclusion in a completely different dimension (a mental illness — unemployment — poverty or sudden deterioration of social status — exclusion from the community of “normal” — the exclusion from public life and cultural). In order to change public awareness and prevention of exclusion, it is necessary to take a wide variety of activities, so as to ensure that mentally ill persons the right to live in dignity, respect, care, treatment and work.
