Summary/Abstract: The 1930s national setting for foreign language teaching in Bulgaria differs significantly from the traditional milieu characteristic of most other European countries: it is marked by a lack of modern cultural institutions, there is no general nationally accepted methodology, authentic foreign language literature is in short supply and there are hardly any well-prepared teachers familiar with good teaching practices and methods and aware of the psycho-physiological needs of their pupils. The two textbooks outlined in this paper – that of Dimiter Gavriyski and the one of Blagoy Mavrov, are among the first attempts at correcting this situation and offer a methodological aid in organizing the basis of foreign language teaching as well as an opportunity of in-depth intensification of the process of learning.
