Summary/Abstract: Marian Oleś, the future archbishop, was born In 1934 in Miastków, in the diocese of Łomża. At the age of 6 he and his family were deported to the city of Archangielsk. After a severe and difficult time of having to move from place to place during World War II, including migrating to India, Oleś and his family eventually settled in England. In 1961 he was ordained as a priest in Rome. After graduating from The Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1966, he worked for Vatican diplomacy for 36 years. He was ordained as a bishop by Pope John Paul II in 1988. He worked for numerous ecclesiastical diplomatic posts in Southern America, Middle East, Asia and Europe. Oleś retired in 2002 due to health problems and died suddenly In Warsaw on 24 May 2005. He was buried in Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw in the tomb of the archbishops of Warsaw.
