Summary/Abstract: Changes in modern migration patterns over the past few decades have led researchers to redefine the theoreti-cal approaches and to examine temporal and spatial dimension of population movements. Realizing that the long-term change of residence is increasingly replaced by temporary relocation, short-term and circular move-ments, helped theorists to make turn toward the concept of spatial mobility. This concept is not unique, but in the social sciences is used in at least four meanings and includes residential mobility, migration (both interna-tional and regional), travel (tourist and business), as well as the daily movement of the population. The aim of this study will be to examine the characteristics of the two residential groups of medium-sized towns in Serbia: those who have experience with long-term movements and those who are facing time-limited, more frequent and shorter trips. The differences in socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of these groups are expected to be found.
