Summary/Abstract: In this paper we present a particular group of Serbian intellectuals, who lived in the Serbian state in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and their attempt to give modern identity to the national idea in the early 20th century, taking into account the imperatives of the complex international situation, and at the same time the continuity of the character of the national idea that was cultivated during the 19th century. At this touch of the centuries, civil liberal thought made the evolutionary transition from national romanticism to the gradual, research, educational and cultural approach to the national idea. Their intentions were to add new knowledge ad so complete the strategic hope of the Serbs, that of unification into an independent state, and to initiate its political implementation in contemporary resilient, adaptable and least turbulent direction. In this regard, we will focus on certain segments of work by John Cvijić, Tihomir Ostojić, Isidora Sekulić, Laza Kostić, Vasa Stajić, Veljko Petrović and others, which present their views on national identity.
