Summary/Abstract: In Antiquity, navigation was the only safe way of transportation, while land transport was very little used because of inconvenience, cargo traffic was less developed and human trafficking was almost nonexistent even though roads had been built between cities. Over time a postal service has been set up, but it was only used by authorities. With the advent of feudalism any traffic stopped and abandoned roads were damaged, and travellers risked losing their lives or being completely robbed. But the higher ranking was accompanied by the military to protect them against vandalism. The 13th -14th centuries are characterized by the development of trade and the roads were taken care of, although the vehicles were heavy, overcrowded and only the rich could afford the luxury of travel. But this impediment was not permanent because afterwards appeared the light vehicles, wide and comfortable, which would transport luggage, people and correspondence, organizing thus the service for long distances, also transporting goods.
