The missing middle? – secondary-school graduates on the European labour market

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to describe the situation of young people on the European labour market after the economic crisis and to outline initiatives undertaken by EU countries to promote social and labour market inclusion. The article presents young middle attainers as the ‘missing middle’ – a group often excluded from policy discourse and social programs. Respective sections highlight EU youth priorities and the situations of young people on the labour market. Next, labour market performance of middle attainers and young people Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) is discussed. A concluding section examines EU social and labour market inclusion initiatives and future trends.
