Summary/Abstract: Aṣțanāyikā is a collective name for the eight basic nayikas/heroine-types or states of the heroine in a detailed treatise and handbook on dramatic art that deals with all aspects of classical Sanskrit theatre. It is believed to have been written by the mythic Brahman sage and priest Bharata. Here is the classification as follows: vāsakasajjā (one dressed up to receive her lover); virahotkanthitā (one distressed at her lover’s absence); svadhinabhartruka (one having her husband in subjection); kalahāntaritā (separated from her lover after a quarrel); khanditā (enraged over her lover’s infidelity); vipralabdhā (deceived by her lover); prositabhartrkā (one whose lover is away on business) and abhisārikā (one who goes to meet her lover). The study seeks to find out whether all the described eight types are extant or lost in contemporary Indian film and if extant, to what extent they agree with the archetypes, illustrating their use with examples.
