Summary/Abstract: The article focuses round institution of electoral thresholds in comparative perspective. Thresholds is minimum percent of the vote a party must obtain to be considered in the allocation of representative positions and is it calculated on a nation-wide basis or in each electoral area. Author in first part of text explains causes introduction of electoral thresholds to proportional system as well as represents their constructions in different states. In second part of article was describe deformation nature of thresholds and their influence on party system. Author makes the analysis of chosen question on the basis of elections to Sejm in 1991–2007 proving that role played by the thresholds differs depending on how high they have been set and on the party system existing in each country. Third part is devote to analysis of influence electoral thresholds in perspective of influence of remaining elements proportional system on basis of election outcomes from 2007. In last part of text the author makes the opinion of institution of electoral thresholds as well as present de lege ferenda postulates. Decrease to 4% electoral threshold in Polish elections to Lower house is the most important postulate.
