Summary/Abstract: The economic crisis in 2008 spilled from financial markets to various segments of the economy and society. During the past year, crisis has mutated into a crisis of public finance in some European countries, primarily Greece and Ireland. We discuss the causes of the crisis, the consequences of the crisis and the anti-crisis measures at the national and international level. The aim is to review the common factors of the crisis and to consider whether they are specific to certain countries and economic environment or their experiences can serve as a general warning to modern states, including Serbia.
