Summary/Abstract: The European Union is a unique creation in international relations. As such, it became a goal for many countries in the region. Regardless of (the goal), the EU has its own pace of development, intra-relationships and integration processes. With this „rhythm of life“, the European Union is subject to its own processes of stabilization and adjustment. The author describes and analyzes these processes that have affected and which continue to influence the development and functioning of the European Union in the last ten years. These processes are – the process of enlargement and process of deepening. The focus of research are at the last enlargement of the EU in 2004. and 2007 and the analysis of the EU Treaty, signed in December 2009. in Lisbon. At the end of the article, the author provides insight into the internal state of the Union which is still recovering from the economic crisis, particularly the crisis in the euro-zone caused by the Greek financial collapse.
