Summary/Abstract: Even before the death of Tito in 1980, it was a subject of diplomatic and media speculations whether Yugoslavia, Tito´s federal multi-ethnic state shall keep together after the death of its founder and eternal president. A record number of foreign heads of state were present at his funeral, which thus became a worldwide media event. It seemed that the citizens of the country, as it was also claimed by the propaganda, would stay on the path of Tito. However, the very next year an armed conflict broke out in Kosovo. From the perspective of today it is more than clear that Tito´s funeral was Yugoslavia´s funeral as well.
