THE IDENTIFICATION SIGNS OF MEDICAL EVACUATION EQUIPMENTS IN MODERN CONFLICTS

Summary/Abstract: The tragic experiences of European military conflicts in the nineteenth-century led to the need to implement a set of international rules and commitments to protect the injured personnel, unable to defend themselves, and to the need for medical organizations strictly dedicated to this type of mission. The establishing of the International Committee of the Red Cross and signing of the Geneva Conventions and the subsequent Protocols forced the combatants to visibly display the signs of medical treatment facilities and medical evacuation equipment and not to involve such facilities and equipment into the list of possible targets. Frequent violations of these protocols by the insurgents în Iraq and Afghanistan started a debate on the necessity of still using these symbols by the international coalition, especially on air evacuation equipment.
