Summary/Abstract: Professor Stanislaw Matysik (1921–1994) graduated from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (1948). In 1949 he received the degree of the Doctor of Law, in 1954 he became an associate professor, and in 1962 a full professor. He worked in schools of higher education and universities, among others, in Sopot, Gdansk, Warsaw, Lodz, Paris, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. His scientific achievements include about 150 items. He researched the history of Maritime law since the half of the 1960-ties and later he focused only on the contemporary maritime law. In the field of historical studies he wrote 22 scientific papers. The most important of them were outstanding monographs: “Coastal Law (Ius naufragii). Study on the History of Maritime Law” (Torun 1950) and “Maritime Law of Gdansk. Historical Legal Study” (Warsaw 1958). They earned him not only nationwide, but also European fame and recognition, which were cemented by 3 – volume work “Maritime Law. Outline of the System” (1971–1975).
