Summary/Abstract: International shipping is a key element of the global economic system. According to the modern concept of the IMO, there is no doubt that international shipping should be concentrated on the quest for its sustainability. The IMO approach to international maritime transport is based on the objective of the balance system by weighing the socio-economic, environmental and political interests. The International Maritime Organization has taken action to protect and preserve the oceans, including in particular the seas and coasts and cooperation for the sustainable development of the global ocean. IMO has established ten specific targets for sustainable maritime transportation system: safety culture and environmental stewardship; education and training in maritime professions, and support for seafarers; efficiency and ship-port interface; energy supply for ships; new technology and innovation; maritime security, including cooperation in combating maritime piracy;maritime traffic support and advisory systems; technical co-operation; finance, liability and insurance mechanisms; ocean governance.
