Summary/Abstract: Irène Némirovsky (1903–1942), an emigrant of Jewish origin coming from Russia, one of the most famous writers in the Inter-War period in France, who chose the way of integration and wrote exclusively in French, in The Master of Souls (Le Maître des âmes) presents the social instability and political situation in France of the thirties, growth of antisemitic hysteria and xenophobia — all this based on historical facts, autobiographical components and myths of this time. This article analyses historical background, genesis, symbols of the novel and the literary heroes’story.
