Realia of Latvian Life in Lithuanian Sources

Summary/Abstract: Words which describe peculiarities of Latvian nation and certain national realia of public life are found both in dictionaries and in texts of various styles. Some of names for public realia are attributed to historical lexis; therefore the sphere of its usage is rather narrow – scientific and popular scientific literature. These are the bookish words which already have become terms, e.g. jaunstrāvnieki, jaunlatvieši. A part of former historical lexis is being revived, therefore it is used more broadly. This group encompasses the words belonging to non-equivalent lexis, e.g. zemessargs, lats, santīms. More often such Latvian words are being lithuanised, i.e. Lithuanian endings are added, sometimes commentaries are given to their meanings. In press, substitution is being used, e.g. instead of the word saeima – seimas is used, instead of satversme – konstitucija.
