Lithuanian and German Surnames of Professional Origin of Klaipeda District (Ethnolinguistic Standpoint)

Summary/Abstract: Personal names may be a part of a system of language, reflecting the world outlook of nation. Very often the bridge meaning of proper name are absolutely clear and shows the cause why this object was so called. More interesting for ethnolinguistics is the so-called semantic personal names. The developement of the surnames of professional origin may be clearly seen from this model: appellative of professional origin → historical personal name → surname. This type of Lithuanian surnames are mostly came from some handicraftsmen names (smith, glazier, potter, shoemaker). German familie names of professional origin, meaning tradesman, seller, salesman are usual. While in Lithuanian language these surnames do not exist at all. Some appellatives of German surnames could be linked with the life of city and its proper realia. Appellatives of Lithuanian surnames of professional origin often are loanwords: Germanisms and Slavisms.
